Barry Allen (Gustin) aka Flash originally appeared in Arrow which served as the audition of sorts to get the spin-off series of DC Comics character who fights crime with the aid of his superhuman speed. The Flash tells the origin story of Allen who sees his mother murdered by a supernatural force and his father wrongfully convicted of the crime. He gets taken in by Detective Joe West (Martin) and his family.

Allen is incredibly smart and spends much of his time investigating the strange circumstances surrounding his mother’s murder when a ball of lightning entered the family’s home and killed her. He studies cold case files and is hell-bent on clearing his father’s name.

He grows up to be a crime scene investigator for Central City and after he’s struck by lightning and doused with chemicals after an advanced particle accelerator malfunctions and spreads radiation throughout the city. He wakes from a coma to find he has superhuman speed and vows to use his powers to protect Central City.
