21. Black Butler

Seasons available: 1

Rating: TV-14

Languages: Japanese with English subtitles; English dubbed

Black Butler may have a relatively young protagonist in Ciel Phantomhive, but it’s not for young children, as the rating indicates. Indeed, Black Butler earns its rating by introducing its other main character, Sebastian Michaelis.

You see, he’s simply “one hell of a butler.” (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

It turns out that Sebastian is not really human at all, but rather a demonic entity. Ciel literally made a deal with the devil in order to avenge his parents and his own kidnapping. The whole butler disguise makes sure that Sebastian is always on call for his young and noble master. While this series definitely falls into the supernatural category, there are often moments of levity and comedy to be found within the 25 episodes available on Netflix.

The series remains extremely popular, with the manga still running and a new animated film coming out next year with much of the original Japanese cast returning. Black Butler has also gotten a live-action adaptation. Unfortunately, Netflix only has the first season, not further adaptations like Book of Circus and Book of Murder. If you peek at the reviews, you’ll see plenty of other users begging for the other adaptations to make their way onto the service.

However, for now, you’ll have to settle for just the first season of Black Butler on Netflix.
