1. Rurouni Kenshin

Seasons available: 3

Rating: TV-14

Languages: Japanese with German, Spanish, Arabic, English, and Traditional Chinese subtitles; English dubbed

So, we’ve just spent a slide discussing the merits of Death Note. What kind of series could surpass it?

Simple: an even older classic that can still hold up nearly 20 years after its first airing on Japanese television. Rurouni Kenshin is that classic.

Our hero is Kenshin, a man who once enjoyed a career as one of the most infamous assassins of the shogunate. Now, after the Meiji Restoration, he’s settled into the life of a wandering samurai, wielding a katana that makes it nearly impossible for him to kill. However, when he arrives in Tokyo one day, he meets someone claiming to be him as well as a young kendo teacher named Kaoru, and the adventure goes on from there.

Though there’s plenty of action, the original manga has the subtitle of Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story, so, of course, there’s a bit of romance to be had as well, between the sword fights, character development, and some actual history.

Don’t be surprised if you feel the need to pick up the manga after you finish watching Rurouni Kenshin. This classic is a must-watch for new and old fans of anime alike.
