2. Death Note

Seasons available: 1

Rating: TV-14

Languages: Japanese with English subtitles; English dubbed

Death Note is a modern classic of anime, and it’s no surprise that Netflix has chosen to make a live-action adaptation of its own to be released at some point in the future.

The titular object appears to be a simple notebook, but it has some incredible powers: writing a person’s name in it causes that person to die, so long as you know the person’s name and face, and you can add in details if necessary.

One day, teenager Light Yagami discovers one of these notebooks and decides that he’ll use its powers for his idea of good, which entails killing off criminals. Yes, he becomes a serial killer of criminals while still going to school and while having a police officer for a father. The great detective L steps in to stop him, and what follows is a series of moves and countermoves between two brilliant intellects.

Death Note also has one of the more epic anime opening sequences. Though it doesn’t have a lot of action, per se, it remains absolutely gripping television. Although the second arc isn’t of the same quality, it’s still an excellent watch. With 37 episodes of about 22 minutes each, don’t be surprised if you end up watching this series in huge chunks.
