3. Attack on Titan

Seasons available: 1

Rating: TV-MA

Languages: Japanese with English subtitles only

Attack on Titan has two of the most epic opening sequences in recent memory. (The first, more famous of the two is above. Yes, the opening words are in German.) It’s easy to assume that because the openings are so good, everything that follows must be disappointing in some way, shape, or form.

That is most emphatically not the case.

The show follows the exploits of Eren Yaeger, a teenager who lives in a walled city as one of the last humans on the planet. The walls ostensibly protect humanity from the Titans of the title, huge, skinless humanoids with some serious destructive power. Although Eren is the protagonist, Attack on Titan actually also has a great cast, including characters like Mikasa, Armin, and Levi. They, like Eren, are part of the Survey Corps that leaves the city to explore the world and face the risk of the Titans regularly.

The long-awaited second season will premiere in April 2017 in Japan.

In short, this series actually makes a great entry point to the world of anime — it’s hard to resist the excellent action sequences and the post-apocalyptic world of the Titans. If you’ve seen it before, feel free to rewatch it now, because Netflix won’t have this series forever.
