Puella Magi Madoka Magica looks like your standard magical girl anime, in the vein of Sailor Moon, to use the perhaps most well-known reference out there.

This anime is not also Sailor Moon at all. What does it mean to have these powers and be an eighth grader? Madoka Magica attempts to answer these questions. It does require a commitment of a couple episodes before things start to kick in, though.

The three movies available on Netflix retell the story of the anime (Beginnings and Eternal), then present an additional story set in the same world (Rebellion). Don’t watch them until you’ve finished the series at minimum. Fortunately, the series only has 12 episodes. That’s practically a weekend watch, especially for those who knocked out something like Stranger Things in a day.

Underneath its cartoonish atmosphere and art style lies a very deep show that asks some tough questions about the nature of an extremely popular genre. Like Kill la Kill, it requires a knowledge of the genre overall — a familiarity with something like Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura won’t hurt. Additionally, it’s not a kids’ show, and so isn’t something you should put on with the young’uns in the room, especially not as you get deeper into the series.
