Durarara!! does not need mecha to have a good time. It has a bit of a slow start — many peg episode 6 as when things really pick up — but if you’re committed, you might just find yourself enjoying this series immensely.

When Mikado moves to the Ikebukuro district of Tokyo, he gets a larger taste of the big city than he ever imagined, including some paranormal activity, a gang, and a mysterious motorcycle rider who may or may not be missing her head. There’s also a sequel series.

One Netflix reviewer compares this to the oeuvre of Quentin Tarantino, and that actually makes an odd amount of sense. Tarantino’s films occasionally start slowly, and they have a tendency to incorporate multiple perspectives; Durarara!! does the same. Things might not always seem connected, encouraging patience in the viewer and a bit of thought. In other words, this isn’t an anime that lets you shut your brain off completely.

Furthermore, the animation is pretty great overall, so it’s never visually boring. There are also plenty of action scenes to be had. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a very different take on how to tell a story.
