13. Ajin: Demi-Human

Seasons available: 1

Rating: TV-MA

Languages: Japanese with French, English, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese subtitles; English, French, German, Spanish dubbed

Ajin: Demi-Human is definitely not a kids’ show. We know we’ve said that plenty of times while discussing these series — everything on this list is TV-PG or above — but Ajin earns its TV-MA rating, as you can see in the above trailer, which includes blood, a little medical experimentation, and combat.

The animation style may be slightly off-putting, but the story in particular shines. The term Ajin refers to a group of human-like beings; you can only figure out if you have one on your hands by trying to kill them since they cannot die at all. They can also manifest black matter in the shape of a creature, though it’s tough to control.

The protagonist, Kei, discovers he’s one of them when he’s hit by a bus. The government swoops in on him, but his fellow Ajin also try and recruit him to their own movement and fighting for their rights. As usual, watching in Japanese isn’t a bad idea, but the English dub cast includes famous names like Johnny Yong Bosch.

Season 2 hits Netflix on December 27, so starting this series (or re-watching it) now wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.
