Mushi-Shi has some interesting genre combinations, with Funimation’s official page putting it in the, and we quote here, drama, mystery, supernatural, and slice of life genres. That interplay has us inclined to put this into the “don’t watch this one first” section.

Within the world of the show, spirits known as mushi exist in the space between things like life and death. However, being that they’re spirits, they don’t always get along so well with humans. Enter the titular mushi-shi, Ginko, a man who goes around helping people with their supernaturally-based problems.

When you do get into Mushi-Shi, be prepared to see some absolutely gorgeous animation. Several reviewers have compared it to the works of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, the studio behind works like Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, at least in terms of the level of detail and beauty to be found. However, that TV-14 rating is there for a reason, and kids might find this series boring or difficult to understand.

For grown-ups, though, there’s plenty to enjoy in the mysticism and complex emotions dealt with in each episode. Remember, Mushi-Shi is a drama, too.
