36. Fred Armisen: Standup for Drummers

Fred Armisen is one of my favorite funny people. You know him from Saturday Night Life, Portlandia, Documentary Now and his guest appearances on shows like Parks and Recreation and Archer. You may also know him as the leader of the house band on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Music and comedy. That’s the premise for Armisen’s first stand-up special that I’ve ever seen and which debuted on Netflix in January. I was excited to see what Armisen had in store considering he wasn’t the traditional stand-up comedian like the others on this list, but traditional stand-up be darned because unconventional is what Armisen has made work for him.

Armisen catered his routine to the audience he was performing for, which was a group of fellow drummers. So this drum-based comedy worked better than I thought it would have. Armisen was instructional as he expressed the subtle differences between different styles of music and at the end when he performed on various drum kits through the years. It was fascinating as much as it was funny to hear the differences and recognize the advancements in music technology.

The funniest part for me was how effortlessly Armisen went through the various accents for the 50 states. He went from Maine to Montana and most places in between as he bounced from one regional accent to the next. It was incredibly funny and accurate.
