44. The Giver

Released on: August 15, 2014

Directed by: Phillip Noyce

Written by: Michael Mitnick, Robert B. Weide

Starring: Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, Katie Holmes

This film is based on the 1993 young adult novel of the same name. It took a little while for this film to be made, and for just cause: it doesn’t contain the typical light-hearted subject matter that most young adult novels have (Twilight, anyone?), and it was also in development hell for decades (originally, Jeff Bridges acquired the film rights to the book back in the mid-1990’s, with the hope that his now-late father, Lloyd Bridges, would play the role of The Giver; ultimately, Jeff Bridges himself would play the titular role).

Like many other sci-fi films on this list, The Giver deals with a post-apocalyptic future: in this case, the end of the world is marked by an event called The Ruin. The survivors have different types of gifts given to them, but one person – The Receiver of Memory – keeps all the bad memories of the past.

Since this Receiver is the only person to have memories of life before The Ruin, all decisions for the future of the people must be made by them (though not in a direct role; they must advise the leaders of this new future). The film received critical and commercial acclaim when it was released and was a box office success.
