Like a few other films on this list, this film makes the list of one of best films of all time in addition to the list of the 50 best sci-fi films on Netflix. And for good reason: this silent film was one of the first-ever sci-fi films to ever be committed to celluloid and one of the first films ever.

Its contributions to cinema as a whole, and sci-fi cannot be overstated, and its one of the few films that were appreciated in its time as well as appreciated by later critics. It’s a French silent film directed by Georges Méliès, and its imagery is still used to this day, more than 100 years after the film’s initial release.

Today, the film has been restored and colorized and features music from French synth-pop stars Air. Back then, it was a revolutionary idea: send a man to the moon! Today, in the wake of Mars colonization and finding sentient life on Jupiter, it’s nothing if not fun to watch. And even though it’s only 15 minutes long (remember, again, that this was the very advent of movie-making itself, and the film — and productions — were extremely expensive), it packs a wallop in the short time that it stays with you.
