5. The Road

Released on: November 25, 2009

Directed by: John Hillcoat

Written by: Joe Penhall

Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Robert Duvall, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, this film has a post-apocalyptic take on the end of the world, and we would see a lot of this noir take on the end of the world in The Walking Dead not long after.

The movie only got a limited release after its debut, but it received mostly positive marks from the critics, and lead actor Viggo Mortensen got the most praise for his role as a father who is desperately trying to keep his young son alive after a cataclysmic event that wipes out the entire human race. Despite its limited release, the film received many awards and accolades, and rumor has it that the reason the Weinsteins only gave the film a limited release after its initial delay was because they wanted to see that the film would be nominated for an Oscar.

Though it didn’t receive any Academy Award nominations – let alone wins – it was nominated for a Golden Lion award at the Venice International Film Festival. It also won awards from the Utah Film Critics Association and the San Diego Film Critics Association. Robert Duvall also received several nominations for his work as a supporting actor in the film.
