Let’s get this out of the way right now: this film’s subject matter is absolutely awful and is perhaps one of the biggest fears that a woman who has been raped has: contracting something deadly, and not knowing what, precisely, she’s contracted. That’s the basis of this independent film, released by IFC Films: Samantha, who’s played by Najarra Townsend, is trying to get over the breakup with her girlfriend, so she goes out on the town.

In the process, she gets raped by the man she goes out with on a date (and for the record, the marketing company who distributed this film got a lot of heat because they advertised Samantha’s rape as a “one night stand”), and contracts a deadly STD whose origin she can’t determine. Eric England wrote and directed the film over a 15-day period in Los Angeles.

To date, the film has received mixed reviews, with most critics praising the acting and the subject matter while pointing out that the characters are stereotypical. There was even a sequel (titled, perhaps too appropriately, Contracted II), and a third installment of the movie is in the works and set to be released on Halloween – October 31, 2017.
