No. 46 – The Finest Hours  (2016)

Written by: Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy, and Eric Johnson (screenplay)/Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman (novel)

Directed by: Craig Gillespie

Starring Chris Pine, Eric Bana, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, and Holliday Grainger

The Finest Hours came and went in theaters without too many people noticing. Released in January, it was actually considered a box office failure despite many critics’ praises. However, the oddness of its release and success is partly why we decided to include it on this list, as it is not only an enjoyable movie but well-acted and directed.

The film is the story of Bernard “Bernie” Webber (Pine), a member of the U.S Coast Guard, who risks his life along with several other crew members to save the the remaining crew of the SS Pendleton, an oil tanker that splits in half in a boating accident. Meanwhile, on the boat, the Pendleton’s last remaining officer, Ray Sybert (Affleck), has to also keep what remains of the tanker afloat until help can arrive. As both men and their crews race against the storms, cold, and certain death, The Finest Hours gives us really compelling performances from Pine, Affleck, and Holliday Grainger as Bernie Webber’s wife to be.

Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, and even Eric Bana are the type of actors, as well, who have a tough time making a movie you can’t watch multiple times. This is another one to add to their respective lists, and anytime you can Netflix an “against all odds” movie, not to mention an “against all odds featuring giant waves and freezing rain” movie, you have to watch.
