No. 4 – The Usual Suspects (1995)

Written by: Christopher McQuarrie

Directed by: Brian Singer

Starring Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollack, and Benicio Del Toro

Who is Keyser Soze?

This is a question you’ll be asking yourself this entire movie right up until the finish. With one of the all-time cinematic endings to a film, The Usual Suspects is as twisty and mysterious as Netflix dramas get. Brian Singer’s instant classic is a study on the ways in which we, the viewers, perceive the typical film narrative, as well as the ways in which we miss elements of films that are hiding in plain sight.

This particular crime drama follows the aftermath of a heist gone wrong, involving five known criminals, four of which are dead and one (Spacey) being held by police. Through Kevin Spacey’s character , Verbal Kent, we learn the story of these men and how they were recruited to this disaster of a job by a mysterious figure named “Keyser Soze”, an urban legend in the criminal underworld.

Kevin Spacey won an Oscar for this role, and rightfully so. It may seem odd that a movie like this is as far up the list as it is, yet once you get to the last act of the movie, your entire perception will change. I doubt you’ll forget the name Keyser Soze, either, once the credits finally roll.
