No. 6 – Boogie Nights (1997)

Written by: Paul Thomas Anderson

Directed by: Paul Thomas Anderson

Starring Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, William H. Macy, and Heather Graham

One of two top ten movies on this list directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, Boogie Nights is an absolute cult classic. Following the life of Eddie Adams, Boogie Nights tells the story of Eddie’s descent into the pornographic films industry of 1970s California. We watch as Eddie, over the years, becomes more and troubled as he falls deeper into the empty glamor of porn fame.

This is Mark Wahlberg at his best, and he has one of the all-time memorable supporting casts behind him as well. Paul Thomas Anderson has always been one of the most pristine directors in the business, and Boogie Nights may be a movie ahead of its time; it’s his version of Outkast’s Aquemini album. Make sure to watch for a classic tracking shot scene involving William H. Macy’s character that comes at the end of the film’s first act. You won’t be disappointed.
