No. 17 – Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

Written by: Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola

Directed by: Wes Anderson

Starring Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and Jason Schwartzman

Almost all of Wes Anderson’s movies tend to have the same stylistic qualities to them, as viewers know what they are getting into with his films. Like most auteurs, Anderson has become a master of the subtle, dry humor found in the banality of our lives. He has always been able to take the absurdity of our habits, fixations, and obsessions, and spin them in a way that actually makes his characters very real even when they are part of an almost surreal plotline.

His movies aren’t for everyone, but movies like Moonrise Kingdom should be experienced by as many of us out there that are open to it. This particular film is a coming of age story about two young kids, Sam and Suzy, and their first adolescent experiences with love. This is contextualized through their interactions with the very quirky, and flawed adults in their lives played by an all-star cast and led by the likes of Bruce Willis and Edward Norton.

Moonrise Kingdom is Wes Anderson’s forte, and it plays itself out perfectly with a truly hilarious performance from Edward Norton, specifically. Both of his younger stars in the movie are very talented for their age, and one can only hope he includes them in his upcoming projects.
