No. 18 – Braveheart (1995)

Written by: Randall Wallace

Directed by: Mel Gibson

Starring Mel Gibson, Sophie Marceau, Patrick McGoohan, and Catherine McCormack

The 1995 Academy Award winner for Best Picture speaks for itself here. Mel Gibson’s epic tale of William Wallace’s Scottish Rebellion against England in the 13th century has everything a Netflix subscriber needs: action, drama, battle cries, and even some light, but short-lived, comedy involving mooning the opposing army.

What makes Braveheart work is Mel Gibson who, despite all of his recent troubles, is both a formidable director and brilliant actor. Watching Braveheart again, it’s both a shame to see where he’s ended up in Hollywood these days, and also nostalgic to look back and see some of his best work set the trend for epic war movies that could still drive home the dramatic elements they needed to make it work. Just beware of a very bloody film, and keep your kids away from this one.
