No.  19 – Quiz Show (1994)

Written by: Paul Attanasio (screenplay)/Richard Goodwin (novel)

Directed by: Robert Redford

Starring Ralph Fiennes, Rob Morrow, John Turturro, David Paymer, and Hank Azaria

Quiz Show is based on a true story regarding the scandals of Twenty One, an NBC quiz show from the 1950s that came under congressional review after it was suspected of giving its contestants the answers to the questions in advance. Ralph Fiennes and John Turturro play Charles Van Doren and Herb Stempel, rival contestants on the show both competing to remain in the show’s spotlight despite pressure from the producers to cheat. Rob Morrow plays Richard Goodwin, the lawyer tasked with investigating the scandals, as he uncovers the mysteries of the show and faces opposition from both the show’s producers and its contestants to testify against the show.

This is somewhat of a gem on Netflix, mainly because of its high critical praise and low box office turnout when it was originally released. Make no mistake, though; Quiz Show is a highly entertaining movie with two really wonderful performances from John Turturro and Ralph Fiennes. The dialogue is witty, the premise is intriguing, and it covers a historical event that few have probably heard of before, making this Robert Redford movie a high priority on the Netflix dramas list.
