No. 21 – The Verdict (1982)

Written by: David Mamet (screenplay)/ Barry Reed (novel)

Directed by: Sidney Lumet

Starring Paul Newman, Charlotte Rampling, Jack Warden, and James Mason

A courtroom drama starring Paul Newman, directed by Sidney Lumet, and written by James Mamet? Say no more.  The Verdict is, literally, everything a movie should be in terms of characters and plot. Paul Newman is at his absolute best as Frank Galvin, and a down-and-out lawyer taking a medical malpractice case in a last-ditch effort to bring honor back to his career.

However, he is given plenty of room to shine through David Mamet’s top-notch script, including a closing argument scene at the end of the film that will knock your metaphorical socks off. Sidney Lumet is also on another level in this film with some truly inspiring courtroom cinematography, as well as excellent casting with James Mason playing the film’s antagonist. Paul Newman is Michael Jordan going for his sixth ring in this film, and he puts out one of the best performances of his career in his efforts. You should probably just watch this film right now and read the rest of the list later. Just kidding.
