No. 22 – Black Hawk Down  (2001)

Written by: Ken Nolan

Directed by: Ridley Scott

Starring Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Tom Sizemore, Eric Bana, William Fichtner and Sam Shepard

Apparently, I was wrong about Josh Hartnett, because he just made it within the top 30 dramas TWICE. Black Hawk Down is the retelling of the real-life events surrounding the failed military operation within Somalia in 1993. After a U.S. Military helicopter is shot down by rebel militia in Somalia, military ground forces are deployed to rescue the crashed survivors before they are killed or captured by militia. Ridley Scott’s film tells the story from several different perspectives as various groups of soldiers, including the crashed survivors, fight to survive the night.

Ridley Scott movies are rarely bad. His distinct cinematic style makes Black Hawk Down a very enjoyable film, hitting all the typical war movie beats. He even includes Tom Sizemore in the cast; someone who may require from his agent that he play a soldier at least once a year for the next 35 years. This is by no means the best war drama of the last 25 years or so, but it is an effective movie with an ensemble cast that is not only believable but emotionally engaging. This is a great late-night weekend movie.
