No. 23 – What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

Written by: Peter Hedges

Directed by: Lasse Hallstrom

Starring Johnny Depp, Juliette Lewis, Mary Steenburgen, and Leonardo DiCaprio

The film follows Gilbert Grape (Depp), a young man tasked with taking care of his family, including his disabled brother (DiCaprio) and his grief-stricken mother (Darlene Cates), all the while trying to balance his increasingly difficult home life with his own dissatisfaction in life. Gilbert clearly wants to escape his Iowa life, yet has to bear the responsibility of being the man of the house his father is longer around to be.

For those of you Johnny Depp fans looking for a little change of pace from his more normal, quirky films, this is a must-watch. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape shines because it really captures the fear and anxiety we all experience when growing up and having to take responsibilities handed down to us that we may not have expected to ever have. Gilbert is scared, and his brother and mom feel like too much for him to handle, yet his journey into manhood is a fascinating character study excelled by the fact that Johnny Depp is a great actor. Also, if you’re looking for the movie to show you how we all knew Leonardo Dicaprio would be a star, look no further than here.
