No. 27 – Lucky Number Slevin (2006)

Written by: Jason Smilovic

Directed by: Paul McGuigan

Starring Josh Hartnett, Lucy Liu, Bruce Willis, Ben Kingsley, Morgan Freeman, and Stanley Tucci

It’s pretty amazing that a movie starring Josh Hartnett, of all actors, makes it this far on our list, but Lucky Number Slevin makes up for Hartnett’s lack of acting chops with an intriguing plot, charismatic villains, and some truly great twists at the end. It’s one of the better crime dramas on Netflix, currently, and Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley, and Lucy Liu really steal any and all scenes that they get in this film.

The movie is about a young man named Slevin (Hartnett) who, upon visiting his friend Nick in New York City, is mistakenly identified as Nick by two rival mob bosses (Freeman and Kingsley) who want him to kill the other. Meanwhile, it seems as though a rogue hitman (Willis) is also on the hunt for Slevin, as Slevin and Nick’s neighbor, Lindsey (Liu), try to find out what exactly the mysterious Nick has gotten his friend into.

Sometimes a hard film to follow because of the plot twists throughout, Slevin is, overall, a really great Netflix movie to watch. It’s extremely re-watchable, has an all-star cast, and is literally the peak of Josh Hartnett’s acting career as a movie star (don’t you dare mention Pearl Harbor to me).
