No. 28 – Short Term 12 (2013)

Written by: Destin Daniel Cretton

Directed by: Destin Daniel Cretton

Starring Brie Larson, John Gallagher Jr., Rami Malek, and Kaitlyn Dever

Short Term 12 follows the story of Grace (Larson), a supervisor of a troubled teen facility, who is also dealing with her own personal issues, such as an unplanned pregnancy with her boyfriend Mason (Gallagher Jr.), and mental health problems.  The film mainly follows her through her interactions with Jayden (Dever), a reluctant, reserved teen being sexually abused by her father. As Grace attempts to get Jayden to open up and face her problems with her dad, Grace has to figure out how she’s going to handle her pregnancy.

To put it quite frankly, Short Term 12 is an excellent film through and through. Not only does it contain three of our brightest up and coming actors in Larson, Keith Stanfield, and Rami Malek, but it also deals with the mental health problem in America, and our current system’s inability to fully deal with what many young adults are going through. Cretton’s film is able to give us not only an amazing performance from Brie Larson, arguably 2013’s most overlooked one at that, but he also gives us the very real glimpses of hope that many kids, like Marcus and Jayden’s characters, experience, if only temporarily. Be prepared to get in your feelings when watching this one.
