No. 36 – Cinderella Man  (2005)

Written by: Cliff Hollingsworth and Akiva Goldsman

Directed by: Ron Howard

Starring Russell Crowe, Renee Zellweger, Paul Giamatti, and Bruce McGill

Cinderella Man tells the story of heavyweight boxer James Braddock (Crowe), his wife Mae (Zellweger), and his longtime coach Joe (Giammati), and it chronicles Braddock’s life in the ring on his way to becoming heavyweight champion of the world during the Great Depression. Both Howard’s directing, as well as stellar performances from the film’s three stars, carries this underdog story of Braddock’s historical fight against Max Baer, the current heavyweight champion. Yet the film also succeeds because of its context within the events of the Great Depression as Braddock grips with the reality of boxing’s effects on his body compared to the quality of life he had before he rose to fame.

Everyone loves a boxing movie (unless that movie is Rocky V, and then maybe not everyone loves boxing movies). Similarly, everyone seems to really enjoy movies that have Russell Crowe, Renee Zellweger, and Paul Giamatti in them as well. Cinderella man works because Ron Howard is a great director, Crowe is a great leading man, Zellweger is always a delight when she isn’t burdened with a film’s entire plot, and Paul Giammati it the best actor at being a small, witty guy with suspenders, or at least top three. That’s a winning combination if you ask me.
