Worst: The Out-Laws
The Out-Laws is a great premise. The Netflix original film tells the story of a young couple preparing to get married, although Owen hasn’t met the family of his fiance, Parker, yet. But when Owen’s bank is robbed, he starts to believe it might be Parker’s parents behind the robbery. The movie also features a great cast with Adam Devine, Nina Dobrev, Ellen Barkin, Pierce Brosnan, Richard Kind, Poorna Jagannathan, Michael Rooker, Blake Anderson, Lauren Lapkis, Lil Rel Howery, and more. When you have a cast this good, the material has to be there for them to play, and it’s not.
The problem with The Out-Laws is the execution of this idea. It’s a comedy that’s not that funny. The performers don’t get an opportunity to shine, and the story just drags at times. There’s no doubt The Out-Laws is one of the worst Netflix movies of the year so far.
I don’t like to criticize too harshly. It’s hard to pull off comedies like this for a wide audience on Netflix. Surely, someone likes The Out-Laws, but there’s not a lot going for a movie that should just be better with all of the great talent involved. Netflix had high hopes with its Fourth of July 2023 release, and it falls flat in basically every way.
