Mike Flanagan is back with a brand new horror series on Netflix! It’s called The Fall of the House of Usher, and man is it good! If you’re a fan of his other shows on Netflix, like The Haunting of Hill HouseThe Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass, you absolutely must check this one out.

It’s a show loosely adapted from Edgar Allan Poe’s 1839 short story of the same name and some of his other works. It follows the ambitious yet ruthless twin duo Roderick and Madeline Usher, who build a family dynasty through their corrupt pharmaceutical company. But when their bloodline starts mysteriously dying one by one in a brutal fashion, secrets come to light, and they’re forced to face their dark, questionable past.

Many familiar faces from Flanagan’s other shows appear in the series, such as Carla Gugino, Zach Gilford, Henry Thomas, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Samantha Sloyan, T’Nia Miller, Sauriyan Sapkota, Ruth Codd, and Aya Furukawa. Additionally, Bruce Greenwood and Mary McDonnell star as Roderick and Madeline Usher, while Mark Hamill plays Arthur Pym, the Usher family’s right-hand man and lawyer.

I’m sure you can’t wait to watch this new horror series, but before you hit play on the show’s title page on Netflix, we must share the parents guide and age rating. That way, you’ll know if you can watch this show with kids around.

What is The Fall of the House of Usher rated?

It’s rated TV-MA, meaning it’s only meant to be watched by mature, adult audiences. It was given this age rating for strong language, sex, smoking, substances, suicide, and graphic violence. There’s also tons of blood and gore and some nudity. Obviously, none of the content just listed would be appropriate for young kids to be watching, so we don’t recommend watching this show when they’re around.

Here’s a list of some scenes in the series that many parents would consider inappropriate for kids to be watching:

  • Many characters are burned alive.
  • A woman’s completely burned body is shown.
  • Characters are making out.
  • Characters are taking and snorting drugs.
  • Several men and women are shown completely naked, with private parts somewhat shown.
  • A bloody dead cat with its guts hanging out is shown.
  • A monkey kills a woman, and her bloody dead body is shown.
  • Several bloody dead animals are shown.
  • A man falls off a balcony to his death.
  • A woman bleeds to death on the floor after being hit in the head with a hard object.
  • A woman stabs herself to death with a knife.
  • A woman dies after tons of glass shards fall and slice through her.
  • A woman’s teeth are pulled out by pliers off-screen, but her bloody mouth is shown afterward.
  • A sharp object slices through a man’s body.
  • Dead bodies are shown falling from the sky.
  • A woman with her eyes cut out is shown.

Is it scary?

Whether or not you find this show scary is subjective and depends on your tolerance for horror. However, I wouldn’t consider The Fall of the House of Usher a scary show in my opinion. It can be creepy and very disturbing, though. With characters constantly dying in brutal ways, it can create a sense of unease and tension. The constant showing of dead bodies and jump scares can also be unsettling. But you should be fine if you’re a horror buff and are used to watching all types of horror shows and movies.

The Fall of the House of Usher is streaming now only on Netflix.
