And we all know that Flanagan is a genius when it comes to this genre. So we’re lucky that there’s another project from him that’s coming our way!

What is the supernatural horror series on Netflix about?

The series is based on the short story of the same name by poet and author Edgar Allan Poe. Perhaps known a bit more for his poetry and a key figure in the Romanticism era in the U.S., the writer was also talented when it came to the darker side of written work. He’s also a central figure when it comes to Gothic fiction and was one of the first to write short stories.

Unfortunately, like many in the past, he wasn’t appreciated for his work during the 1800s. But today, he’s one of the most famous names and deservedly so! The Fall of the House of Usher was first published in Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine in 1839. It was then added to the Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque in 1840.

In the Netflix adaptation, we’re introduced to “ruthless siblings” Roderick and Madeline Usher. The two have built their pharmaceutical company, Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, “into an empire,” per the synopsis. With wealth, privilege, and power under their belt, they seem unstoppable. That is until the heirs of the Usher dynasty begin to die. And it’s all from a mysterious woman from their younger years who’s doing it. What past secrets are coming to light?

The horror stars Bruce Greenwood as Roderick Usher and Mary McDonnell as his sister Madeline Usher. Joining the duo onscreen are Carla Gugino as Verna, Carl Lumbly as Auguste Dupin, Mark Hamil as Arthur Pym, T’Nia Miller as Victorine Lafourcade, Rahul Kohli as Napoleon “Leo” Usher, Kate Siegel as Camille L’Espanaye, and more.

The Fall of the House of Usher begins streaming all eight episodes Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023 at 12 a.m. PT / 3 a.m. ET on Netflix.
