The Great British Baking Show, better known in the UK as The Great British Bake Off, made its triumphant return to Netflix on September 29, 2023, kicking off the latest season with the tantalizing “Cake Week.” As fans eagerly tuned in to witness the sweetest showdown in the baking world, they were met with a twist — Matt Lucas, the beloved co-host who had brought humor and warmth to the show for three series and 51 episodes, has left the show! In his place, a new host had taken the reins, leaving viewers curious.

If you’re wondering why the award-winning British comedian, actor, writer, and television personality, known for his wit and charm, has left the show, and who will step into his shoes, you’re in the right place!

Matt Lucas’s departure from The Great British Baking Show, ahead of The Great British Baking Collection 11, left fans puzzled and curious. The talented comedian and actor offered a clear explanation for his exit, citing scheduling conflicts as the primary reason. In a statement shared on X (then known as Twitter) in December 2022, Lucas expressed his sentiments:

"“Farewell Bake Off! It’s been a delicious experience and I can’t imagine a more fun way of spending my summers, but it’s become clear to me that I can’t present both ‘Fantasy Football League’ and ‘Bake Off’ alongside all my other projects. So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else. I would like to give my warmest thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 and to Noelipops, Paul, Dame Prue, the crew and, of course, the wonderful bakers for welcoming me into the tent. I wish whoever takes over all the very best and I can’t wait to tune into the next series without already knowing who won!”"

In an interview with the Deeney Talks podcast in February, Lucas provided further insights into his decision. He revealed that The Great British Baking Show had been a “pandemic job” for him, and prior to joining the show, he had “never seen the show” nor aspired to host a TV show. Despite this, he confessed to having enjoyed his time on the series.

However, as time passed, Lucas found himself drawn more towards projects that resonated with his interests, including Fantasy Football League, writing a book and a musical, and collaborating on a new TV series with his former Little Britain co-star David Walliams.

“It probably utilizes what I have better than Bake Off,” Lucas remarked regarding his involvement with Fantasy Football League.

Ultimately, stepping away from The Great British Baking Show allowed Lucas to pursue his passions fully, including writing with David Walliams and dedicating time to his musical endeavors, all while continuing his involvement with Fantasy Football League.

Although his departure marks the end of an era on the show, it paves the way for new opportunities in his creative journey!
