Miseducation landed on our Netflix screens just this Friday, September 15, and already it has gained a lot of attention from viewers, but is the teen drama that follows the story of a “wannabe influencer” appropriate to watch with your kids?

Join us as we reveal the official parent guide to the South African series, and help you decide whether Miseducation is a show you should consider letting your kids watch.

But before we delve into our guide, let’s look at what this series is about in more detail!

What is Miseducation about?

Miseducation follows the story of Mbali Hadebe, an aspiring influencer who enrolls in a small-town university following a public humiliation tied to her mother’s disgrace as a corrupt politician. Set in South Africa, the series offers a light-hearted exploration of university life, tackling relevant issues of today. Throughout the series, Mbali navigates the challenges of university life and tries to regain her social status. The official synopsis, as per Netflix Media Center, reads:

"“Miseducation is a teen comedy-drama that follows a young, self-absorbed, first year varsity student who, after a fall from grace at her previous elite private school, embarks on a mission to climb the social ranks at a small-town university, in the hopes of being the stand-out, popular girl she used to be. Thrust into varsity, with new challenges, Mbali Hadebe and her new, eclectic clique of friends, try to overcome various young adult struggles, while coming to terms with who they want to be and how they want to be perceived.”"

Miseducation official rating (parent guide)

Miseducation is a coming-of-age story that explores various themes related to young adulthood and social media. According to IMDb, a TV-MA rating has been attached to the teen drama, which in the USA means a show was intended for young adults as TV-MA stands for “TV Mature Audience”.

As per Alphr’s insight, shows with this rating may contain suggestive or coarse language, sexual content, or violence, rendering them unsuitable for viewers aged 17 and under.

Is Miseducation appropriate for kids?

As mentioned above Miseducation is better suited for a more mature audience, typically recommended for viewers aged 17 and above. Therefore, if you were considering a weekend binge-watching session of its six episodes, we would advise saving it for a time when the kids are comfortably settled in bed.
