NYAD

  • Director: Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin
  • Cast: Annette Bening, Jodie Foster, and Rhys Ifans

Like many of the other highly-anticipated Netflix movies coming this fall, NYAD made its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in early September 2023. The upcoming biographical sports drama stars four-time Academy Award-nominated actress Annette Bening as swimmer Diana Nyad.

Directed by husband and wife Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (NYAD marks the narrative directorial debut of the Academy Award-winning filmmakers), NYAD is based on the real swimmer’s autobiography, Find a Way.

If you’re a fan of biopics and inspiring sports stories, then NYAD should be at the top of your watchlist. NYAD centers on the world-class athlete who gave up marathon swimming to become a prominent sports journalists. But at age 60, Diana becomes intent on completing the legendary 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida, a swim that has forever eluded her.

This particular journey is hailed as the “Mount Everest” of swims because of its dangers and lengths, and Diana wants to become the first person to complete the trek sans shark cage. Academy Award-winning actress Jodie Foster co-stars as Nyad’s close friend and coach, Bonnie Stoll. Early critical buzz has been unanimously positive and the movie currently has a perfect 100% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes based on seven reviews.

NYAD premieres on November 20.
