Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life season 2
When Gilmore Girls suddenly came back to life on Netflix in 2015, it was unexpected. Not that the beloved mother-daughter dramedy left the pop culture conversation after ending in 2007, but the resurgence in popularity thanks to its availability on streaming was a pleasant surprise. Even more surprising? The chance to return to Stars Hollow in a four-part miniseries revival.
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life premiered on Netflix in November 2016 and reacquainted us with the characters we had fallen in love with on The WB in the early aughts. This time around, we find the Gilmore girls in a transitional period. Following the loss of Richard, Lorelai grapples with the next phase of her relationship with Luke, Rory’s professionally and personally a hot mess, and Emily struggles to find her footing on her own.
As is the nature of reboots and revivals, A Year in the Life earned mixed reception among fans, some of which felt Rory’s characterization was a step back from the original series. And don’t even get some fans started on the full-circle pregnancy reveal and cliffhanger in the miniseries’ last scene. You either loved those final four words, hated them, or wanted more. Although the revival wrapped up fittingly and how the creators wanted, season 2 still should have happened.
Because of the era of television we’re still in, you can never say never to an eventual second trip back to Stars Hollow. The cast and creative team have expressed being open to doing so. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life season 2 could jump into another year of Lorelai, Rory, and Emily’s lives and elaborate on the changes they welcomed in the miniseries: Lorelai and Luke finally married, Rory becoming a mother, and Emily finding peace in herself. We need to see it someday!
