GLOW season 4

How does an Emmy-nominated, critically acclaimed, fan-favorite series suddenly find its renewal reversed out of nowhere? It’s a great question. After its third season, GLOW was renewed for its fourth and final season in September 2019 and filming began in February 2020. Of course, we all know what happened next in March 2020.

GLOW season 4 had already wrapped filming on its first episode, with the second episode planned to begin shortly after. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, production was shut down in March 2020, along with all productions at the time. Sadly, by October 2020, Netflix walked back its renewal and announced the show had been canceled. Season 4 would never be filmed or air.

Netflix cited safety concerns about a potential COVID on break on set due to the many wrestling sequences, as well as heightened costs that become widespread in the industry due to added safety protocols. Because the series already had a high budget, Netflix couldn’t make the increases work. On top of that, the season wouldn’t release until 2022, a massive wait from season 3’s 2019 release.

While it’s understandable why GLOW season 4 didn’t happen, it doesn’t make the fact that the series wasn’t able to end on its terms any easier. It’s important to keep the cast and crew safe, and at that time, there were still so many uncertainties. Perhaps someday, GLOW will be able to return in some form to deliver the final season that the characters and fans deserved.
