Netflix has released several great movies this year, but more are on the way! Grant Singer makes his directorial debut with the upcoming David Fincher-esque neo-noir crime thriller film Reptile, starring Justin Timberlake, Frances Fisher, Benicio Del Toro, Alicia Silverstone, and more. Singer shares screenwriting credits with Del Toro and Benjamin Brewer.

Before landing this movie, Singer’s experience has predominantly been in directing music videos and commercials. Some artists he’s worked with include Sam Smith, Ariana Grande, and Taylor Swift.

Reptile stars Benicio Del Toro as a detective assigned to the case of a murdered real estate agent. The more he digs into the investigation, the more he discovers that all is not as it seems, and in the process breaks some of the illusions about his own life. Del Toro reunites with his Excessive Baggage co-star Alicia Silverstone here. The pair play a married couple in the film.

Netflix Reptile release date

Reptile is coming to Netflix on Friday, Sept. 29.

Netflix Reptile plot synopsis

Netflix hasn’t shared the film’s official synopsis yet, but they did release a logline, and director Grant Singer recently chatted with EW to provide an exclusive first look at the movie. Singer says his goal in crafting Reptile was to experiment with the theme of deception.

He wanted to take a multifaceted approach to this idea and create a film that would leave audiences guessing. Singer enjoys ambiguity and credits filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, and Stanley Kubrick for his inspiration.

Here’s what he said to EW in his interview:

"“I think the movie will be exciting to people who like to watch something where you don’t know where it’s leading you, where a film is going to have twists and turns and deceive you. And people who like things that are intense and visceral and suspenseful, I think they’ll find something exciting in this.”"

Reptile starts with the brutal murder of a young real estate agent. Benicio Del Toro plays a hardened detective assigned to solve the case where nothing is as it initially appears.

Here’s the logline shared by the streaming service:

"Following the brutal murder of a young real estate agent, a hardened detective attempts to uncover the truth in a case where nothing is as it seems, and by doing so dismantles the illusions in his own life."

Netflix Reptile cast

As mentioned above, Reptile stars a talented cast, including Academy Award-winner Benicio Del Toro, Frances Fisher, Alicia Silverstone, and Justin Timberlake.

Del Toro portrays grizzled detective Tom Nichols, a man inured to many of the horrors he sees on the job after so many years in his field. But his latest case, the murder of a young real estate agent, forces him to reassess everything he thought he knew about his life. Nothing in this case is what it seems.

Silverstone co-stars as Del Toro’s longtime wife, while Timberlake plays a character named Will Grady.

Reptile cast list:

  • Benicio Del Toro as Tom Nichols
  • Alicia Silverstone as Judy Nichols

  • Frances Fisher as Camille Grady
