Gal Gadot’s new action movie Heart of Stone releases this weekend, so that’s likely to become one of the most-watched Netflix movies over the next couple of days. Beyond that, what other Netflix movies are worth checking out on the weekend of August 11?

The fascinating Untold documentary about Johnny Manziel (or “Johnny Football” as he’s also known) holds it down in the #1 spot in Netflix’s Top 10, joined by other films like the Despicable Me movies, Fatale, and several Fast and Furious films.

On the television side, Netflix viewers are checking out the new limited drama Painkiller and finishing up The Lincoln Lawyer season 2. Suits is still raking in millions of viewership minutes after being added to the streamer in June.

With so many options, choosing what to watch and what to skip can be daunting! Here’s our weekly curated list of Netflix movies worth checking out this weekend.

Best Netflix movies to watch this weekend

Heart of Stone

Watch! Heart of Stone might not win any prizes for originality, but it’s still a fun summer action movie that would have fit right in on the big screen if Netflix released it in theaters. There’s enough spectacle and well-choreographed fight scenes to keep viewers hooked.

Plus, thanks to its PG-13 rating, it’s a good choice for this weekend’s family movie night. Gal Gadot is excellent in the lead role of super-spy Rachel Stone, and she’s supported by a charismatic cast that includes Jamie Dornan, Alia Bhatt, Sophie Okonedo, and Matthias Schweighöfer (who Netflix fans might recognize as Ludwig from Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves).

Bee Movie

Skip! Netflix has added the rather infamous Bee Movie to its catalog. Even if you haven’t seen the film, odds are, if you’ve spent any time on the internet, you’ve seen Bee Movie memed to death. Unless you’re really curious to find out where all those memes spawned from, Bee Movie is a dud and can easily be skipped in favor of other animated Netflix movies. I recommend new releases like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish or Nimona.

Safe

Watch! Jason Statham’s performance elevates what could have been a rather run-of-the-mill action movie into something far more engaging. Statham plays cage fighter Luke Wright, who gets into hot water with a group of Russian mobsters when he decides to throw a match. They murder his family in retaliation. Luke later rescues a young Chinese girl from the same men. She is a math prodigy with a valuable code many people would kill for, and Luke is intent on keeping her safe no matter what.

Marry My Dead Body

Skip! Marry My Dead Body is a Tawainese movie new to Netflix this week. It revolves around the tradition of marrying a living person to someone who has already shuffled off this mortal coil. It’s still practiced in some places today as a way to respect the dead and help them move on. Unfortunately, Marry My Dead Body is too long and a tonal misfire.

River Wild

Watch! River Wild is a remake of the 1994 movie of the same name starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon. Married couple Adam Brody and Leighton Meester act alongside Meester’s Single Parents’ co-star and Saturday Night Live alum Taran Killam.

Meester and Killam play siblings preparing for the adventure of a lifetime on a whitewater rafting expedition. When one of them invites their troubled childhood friend (Brody) along for the trip, their exciting vacation morphs into something far more dangerous.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the Netflix movies being covered here wouldn’t exist.
