Hip-hop is one of the most popular music genres today, and according to the new Netflix docuseries, it’s all thanks to a multitude of women who helped make it the way it is today. So who are the artists featured in the docuseries Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop?

Premiering Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2023, all four 45-minute episodes will be available to stream on Netflix. Per the synopsis, each episode features “a parade of iconic emcees” like MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Rah Digga. The production “contextualizes the history of the music” and how these lovely ladies, and more, have contributed to the genre in the last 50 years since the musical genre was created.

Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop features interviews with artists who were popular “back in the day,” who have a presence today, and women who were crucial behind the scenes as well. Per Netflix, those include producers, stylists, record label executives, journalists, and academic critics.

According to Netflix’s TUDUM website, there’s also “appearances from and/or footage” of Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, Lil’ Kim, Lauryn Hill, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, and more. Hannah Beachler, Raeshem Nijhon, and Dream Hampton directed the doc.

Hampton’s journalistic work is also highlighted in the docuseries. Executive producers include Nijhon and Hampton, MC Lyte, Troy Carter, Carri Twigg, Nicole Galovski, Jennifer Ryan, and Justin Simien.
