Happiness for Beginners
There are plenty of Netflix shows that are based on books, but there are also a fair share of Netflix movies that borrow their character, stories, and worlds from inside the pages of a good read. In 2023, one of the most underrated and best book adaptations on Netflix is none other than the romantic comedy-drama Happiness for Beginners starring Ellie Kemper and Luke Grimes.
Based on the book of the same name by Katherine Center, Happiness for Beginners follows a newly divorced woman as she embarks on a beginners hiking trip to gain a fresh perspective on life and herself. Obviously, when she meets the quirky group of fellow hikers, including a handsome doctor she has a connection with, she get’s a little more than expected.
The movie wasn’t among the biggest of the year, like Jennifer Lopez’s The Mother or Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction 2, but the rom-com remained in the top 10 a bit after its release. Happiness for Beginners proved to be a heartwarming and cathartic watch, maybe one of the most unexpected and comforting movies of summer 2023.
There’s always a question of which was better, the movie or the book? If anyone who adores the movie hasn’t picked up a copy of the book, then you will surely find lots more to love about this story and these characters within Center’s bestseller. Sure, it may not be one of the year’s biggest or best reviewed, but it’s no question among the page-to-screen titles that needs more love.
