The Night Agent
It’s unlikely that anyone could have seen The Night Agent coming in the way that it did. While it’s based on the hit novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk, the spy-thriller was the true definition of an underdog following its March 2023 debut on Netflix. Truly, the series redefined what it means to be an “overnight success,” and it’s so deserving.
In its first dour days of release, The Night Agent amassed nearly 200 million hours viewed, and in less than a month, the series cracked the top 10 most popular English-language Netflix shows of all time. Perhaps the most impressive, the series landed a renewal for season 2 only FIVE DAYS after its initial premiere. That’s simply unheard of, especially on Netflix.
But the series would be nothing without the story from Quirk’s novel. Gabriel Basso stars in the series as the fiercely loyal Peter Sutherland, a low-level FBI agent working in the White House. When the Night Action phone rings one night, Peter’s thrust into a complex political conspiracy that’s much more expansive and deeper than he could have ever imagined.
Even though there’s only one book in Quirk’s lineup about Peter Sutherland, The Night Agent season 2 and any other future season will follow Peter’s journey as an official Night Agent. Since the book is a little bit different from the series, it’s well worth the read to not only see what changes were made but to get to know Peter and his world a little better.
