Virgin River season 5 might have finally been given an official release date, but the news from Netflix comes with a disappointing catch.

After months of speculation, Netlfix has confirmed that the highly anticipated fifth season of its beloved series will finally be coming to Netflix this September… or at least part of the season’s episodes will be coming this September.

When announcing the release date for season 5, Netflix has confirmed that it will be releasing season 5 in two parts with part 1 arriving on Sept. 7 and part 2 coming way at the end of November on Nov. 30. This marks a departure from the typical release structure for the show which has always released its full season at once, rather than being split into two parts.

Virgin River joins a growing list of Netflix original series to be released in parts this year, a strategy Netflix seems to be using more and more much to the disappointment of fans.

How many episodes are in Virgin River season 5?

The good news is that Virgin River season 5 is going to be another long season with 12 episodes total making up the season. These 12 episodes will be split into two parts, with the first part of the season consisting of 10 episodes total and part 2 consisting of two episodes. So why the unusual split?

When announcing the season 5 release strategy, Netflix described the two part 2 episodes as being special holiday episodes. This suggests that the episodes could be self-contained in nature airing as bonus episodes and not directly connected to the season’s narrative. We’ve seen other shows such as When Calls the Heart take similar approaches airing their season, followed by a holiday special months later which is technically part of the season but tells a more self-contained story set during the holidays.

With 10 episodes coming in part 1, it seems likely that part of the season will contain the bulk of the season’s big events but it’s going to be interesting to see how the two parts will be connected. Either way, we can’t wait to see what the Virgin River team has planned for its first holiday episodes!
