Gunther’s Millions

Netflix’s reputation for creating zany, offbeat documentary series isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, thanks to the addition of this crazy story about the world’s richest dog and his caretaker, an Italian entrepreneur named Maurizio Mian.

But that’s honestly just the tip of the iceberg. Not knowing a thing about the German shepherd named Gunther VI or the many rumors surrounding the dog, I had no idea just how strange this story would become.

Condensed into an easy-to-binge four episodes, Gunther’s Millions is a slick, fast-paced docuseries that will throw you for a loop. At times, I did feel like the documentary was a little shallow and went way too easy on Mian, who is, essentially, a conman, but overall it’s an enjoyably odd way to spend a couple of hours.

Who could have guessed that a story that starts off looking like it’s just a tale about a rich dog ends up spiraling into a story involving orgies, social experiments, drama, scandal, and so much more. One thing Netflix does well is creating offbeat documentaries on subjects we might never have heard of otherwise. Netflix seems to enjoy tackling topics that other streamers wouldn’t touch, for better or worse.
