Marcus Mariota has had an eventful journey since entering the NFL. Selected as the second overall pick by the Tennessee Titans in the 2015 draft, Mariota showed promise early on and impressed many with his dual-threat abilities, combining his accurate passing with remarkable speed and agility.
Throughout his tenure with the Titans, Mariota exhibited flashes of brilliance, leading the team to playoff appearances and even winning a playoff game in 2017. However, injuries plagued his career, hindering his progress and eventually leading to a backup role when the Titans brought in Ryan Tannehill.
In 2020, Mariota joined the Las Vegas Raiders, showcasing his versatility and contributing as a playmaker for two seasons before signing with the Atlanta Falcons in 2022. Perhaps it was his status as a new starting quarterback that made Mariota the ideal candidate for Quarterback season 1 which follows the young quarterback across his first season with the team.
As the season begins, Mariota seems to be off to a great start and making himself at home in Atlanta; however, as the season progresses questions about his future with the franchise arise leaving fans to wonder whether he’s still with the team or moved on.
Did Mariota leave the Falcons?
Despite signing a two-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, it’s hinted in Quarterback that Marcus Mariota elected to have surgery that sidelined him for the remainder of the season after the decision was announced that he would be benched following the team’s bye week.
After starting for the Falcons’ first 13 games, Mariota was benched for rookie Desmond Ridder, who started the final four games of the team’s season. Following the move, Mariota elected to have a procedure on his knee which resulted in him having to be placed on injured reserve. Mariota was later cut by the team.
In March, it was announced that Mariota had signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles to play backup to Jalen Hurts.
Who is the Falcons quarterback?
After parting ways with Marcus Mariota, the Atlanta Falcons have confirmed that Desmond Ridder will be their starting quarterback for the 2023 season. The move is not surprising given Ridder was drafted in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Falcons and started their final four games of the 2022 season after the team benched Mariota.
While there is always a chance that the Falcons could change their starting lineup after summer camp or the preseason, Head coach Arthur Smith has confirmed that the team’s current plan going forward is to start Ridder.
Quarterback season 1 is streaming now on Netflix.
