Netflix shows in danger of cancellation: God’s Favorite Idiot

You would think that a comedy series on Netflix starring Melissa McCarthy would be the easiest of wins of all time, but God’s Favorite Idiot premiered in the summer of 2022 not with a bang but with a forgettable thud. Not only did the sitcom garner mostly negative reviews but it hardly made a dent as far as viewership goes. And in 2023, no one’s really talking about it.

The series was created by Ben Falcone, McCarthy’s husband, and the couple stars together as a pair of coworkers dealing with the possibility of the apocalypse. God’s Favorite Idiot seemed to be reaching for something kind of like The Good Place, but what resulted was something of a misfire that probably didn’t need to happen — at least not in this format.

Netflix ordered 16 episodes of the series, which began filming in March 2021 and wrapped in June 2021. The first half the season ultimately debuted in June 2022, and the remaining eight episodes have yet to be filmed. Since the show’s drop nearly one year ago, Netflix hasn’t offered an update on the series, and it’s entirely likely we won’t get one anytime soon.

God’s Favorite Idiot could be the next series in a long line of Netflix shows (comedies especially) to be quietly canceled with no announcement. Just forget it ever happened. While it would be nice for Falcone and McCarthy to finish telling the story, there doesn’t appear to be much demand for part 2. Sometime in 2023, we could very well find out the series has been scrapped.
