Netflix shows in danger of cancellation: Ratched

Sarah Paulson and Ryan Murphy collaborated yet again for the psychological thriller series Ratched, based on the iconic villain Nurse Mildred Ratched originated in the 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (and then brought to life on-screen by the acclaimed actress Louise Fletcher in the 1975 film of the same name). Paulson plays the titular character in the show, which also stars Finn Wittrock, Cynthia Nixon, Jon Jon Briones, Charlie Carver, Judy Davis, and Sharon Stone.

But despite Netflix giving Ratched a two-season order upfront, there has been zero news regarding the show’s second season in over two years, which doesn’t bode well for the show’s future. Even star Sarah Paulson said she doesn’t know if the second season is still happening.

Renewals don’t necessarily mean a show is 100% guaranteed to continue these days either, as we’ve seen a growing trend with networks and streaming services reversing their decisions like Netflix recently did with Inside Job. I would not be surprised if Ratched is next on that list.

Not only has it been radio silence from Netflix, Murphy, and the show’s cast, but several of the stars in Ratched are very popular and have other projects lined up. Finding time in their schedules to film season 2 will be challenging, especially since it’s been so long since season 1 started.

That said, this year is the first time in a while that the cast could have time to film. Paulson has been taking it easy for the past year or two since taking a break from American Horror Story and wrapping Impeachment: American Crime Story. Her only current project is the psychological horror film Dust, which she began filming in September 2022.

Wittrock previously landed a lead role in HBO Max’s Lanterns series, which has been redeveloped by James Gunn, but it’s still being determined if he’s going to be part of the cast. Then there’s Nixon, who is returning for season 2 of the Sex and the City revival And Just Like That, which is currently filming but should wrap in the next few months.

Murphy is always busy with something between his many projects at FX and Netflix, including recently renewals of Monster and The Watcher, but considering he’s (or at least, his production company) clearly going to keep working with Netflix for many more years, maybe they can find room to squeeze Ratched season 2 in at some point?
