Netflix shows in danger of cancellation: Shadow and Bone
Shadow and Bone season 2 premiered in March 2023 after a nearly two-year long wait for new episodes. Following its premiere on Netflix in April 2021, the fantasy drama based on the Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo was a hit with fans of the genre. However, the second season appeared to have debuted with a slight fizzle rather than a raucous bang.
In its first week of availability, Shadow and Bone season 2 pulled just over 50 million hours viewed, and in its second week, over 55 million hours. The third week marked a steep decline to 27 million hours watched, and in the fourth week, which saw the series drop out of the streamer’s daily top 10 ranking, grabbed over 16 million hours viewed.
Generally, numbers such as these aren’t a good thing for Netflix shows. The streamer keeps a close watch at the first-month viewership of its original series, and these figures pale in comparison to debut series The Night Agent, which premiered one week after Shadow and Bone season 2 to over 168 million hours viewed in its first week and was renewed for a second season less than a week later.
Of course, more variables factor into Netflix’s decision to renew or cancel a series, such as completion rate and budget. Shadow and Bone features a big budget due to special effects, but the streamer has invested a lot of time and effort into telling this story for its fans. While the season 2 ratings point to the show being in danger of cancellation, we’re hoping at the very least that a final season announcement arrives along with cancellation news. The series deserves better!
