Best Netflix series endings: How did Dead to Me end?

After three hilariously twisted seasons, Dead to Me came to an end in November 2022 with its third and final season. Even though no fans wanted to see the dark comedy series end so soon (we would have taken three more seasons at least!), Dead to Me finished its story on its own terms and tied up all the loose ends beautifully… and heartbreakingly.

In the final season, Judy (Linda Cardellini) receives a terminal cancer diagnosis, and while Jen (Christina Applegate) tries to jump through hoops to keep her best friend by her side, Judy resolves herself to her fate. Ultimately, Jen and Judy get away with their crimes (with a little help from the Greek syndicate), but Judy passes away off-screen in the series finale.

Elsewhere in the final season of Dead to Me, Jen and Ben (James Marsden) end up together and have a daughter (surprise!). The last scene of the series suggests that Jen, riddled with guilt at enjoying a peaceful life, breaks the truth about everything to Ben. Viewers are left to wondered what becomes of that conversation after the screen fades to black.

Dead to Me’s ending might have been super emotional and full of tears, but the message and representation of best friendship makes it one of the best Netflix series endings. Also, it doesn’t get much better than Applegate and Cardellini giving the best performances of their careers as a dynamic duo one last time. This is how you end a beloved series.
