Best Netflix shows endings: How did Firefly Lane end?

SPOILERS FROM THE FIREFLY LANE SERIES FINALE AHEAD!

Firefly Lane’s second and final season was supersized compared to its 10-episode first season and split into two parts. The first batch of nine episodes was released in December 2022, and the final seven episodes of the series followed in April 2023, brining the 16-episode season — and the fan-favorite series as a whole — to an end. But what happened and was it good?

In the season 2 part 1 finale, Kate was diagnosed with breast cancer and emotionally crumbling. Even though she and Tully have been estranged due to their fight over the car accident that endangered Marah, she attempts to visit Tully, but she just misses her ex-BFF as she embarks on a new career opportunity. The final episodes pick up with Tully and Kate reconciling, but that’s easier said than done, high health stakes or not.

Across the final season, we’re once again treated to events throughout the years, in the past and future. Marah was revealed to be the bride in 2016, but Kate wasn’t there by her side. In the series finale, Kate passes away peacefully after taking in nature and having a normal conversation with Tully. Overcome with emotion, Tully can’t bring herself to enter Kate’s funeral. Instead, Johnny gives her a box Kate prepared with a letter, a joint, and an iPod queued up with “Dancing Queen.”

There’s no better way Firefly Lane could have ended. Although it’s sad beyond belief and will have you ugly crying, it’s a beautiful ending for this decades-spanning story about the complex and romantic journey of best friendship. Kate and Tully were so deeply entwined in each other’s spirit, and watching Tully move forward with Kate in her heart was nothing short of special.
