Worst Netflix series endings: Gentefied
There’s no way around it: Gentefied is one of the most underrated Netflix original series of all time. The dramedy, which counted Emmy-winning Ugly Betty and Superstore alum America Ferrera as an executive producer and director, centered on three Mexican-American cousins chasing the American Dream and dealing with generational family drama.
Although it wasn’t a huge breakout success, Netflix renewed Gentefied for a second season after its 2020 debut. Season 2’s premiere in November 2021 didn’t seem to connect with a wider audience, and the series became the first show Netflix canceled in 2022.
It’s so unfortunate that Gentefied didn’t have the opportunity to really soar. The show was so touching and important in its honesty surrounding the Latinx experience, especially as it relates to being undocumented. Surely, many viewers could see themselves and their families’ stories on screen, and in that sense, Gentefied was every bit of a success.
But it ranks as one of the worst Netflix series endings for having ended at all. Gentefied deserved a third and final season to wrap up the storylines, including the season 2 cliffhangers. Even though it’s not coming back to Netflix, both seasons are still worth adding to your watch list.
