There’s no denying that All American is one of the best sports drama series airing. The fifth season finished its run on The CW in May 2023 and arrived just eight days later on Netflix. Of course, it didn’t take long for Netflix Lifers to binge-watch the 20-episode season on the streamer, and now they’re wondering what’s next in All American season 6.

All American is known for its jaw-dropping season finale cliffhangers, but the fifth season’s finale might just take the cake. Honestly, the fifth season in its entirety was full of many twists and turns. I mean, no one was expecting the death of a beloved character.

While everything seems to be looking up for most of the main characters at the end of the fifth season, one character’s fate is left up in the air in the last scene of the season. A character is stabbed, and viewers are left wondering if they will survive the attack. Unfortunately, we won’t find out until the sixth season premieres. Here’s what we know about season 6 right now! The latest update was on Feb. 15, 2024.

All American season 6 premieres in April 2024

The CW renewed the sports drama for a sixth season back in January 2023. This was considered an early renewal since the fifth season was still airing at the time. On Feb. 15, 2024, the network announced that season 6 would make its premiere on Monday, April 1 at 8/7c on The CW.

Here’s what Brad Schwartz, president of entertainment at The CW, had to say about the renewal:

"Over the last five seasons, ‘All American’ has established itself as one of the all-time CW flagship franchises. ‘All American’ is not only the network’s youngest series, but also the strongest performer when combining all our platforms. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, the entire creative team and the incredible cast for another season of captivating family drama."

Although The CW had originally slated the sixth season to premiere in the fall of 2023, the then-ongoing writers’ and actor’s strikes pushed the season into 2024. Both of the strikes came to a resolution by the end of 2023, which allowed for the writers and actors to get back to work on the highly anticipated new season in 2024.

According to The CW president, season 7 could happen

Along with the announcement of the season 6 premiere date, The CW's president of entertainment Brad Schwartz shared an exciting update for All American fans who might be concerned that season 6 could be the show's last. Given the state of the network and the extensive cancellations of the past few years, the fates of the last three remaining CW shows of old are up in the air. But according to the president, there could be a potentially bright future for All American.

As reported by Deadline, here's what Schwartz said about the show's future:

"CBS and Warner Bros have been so wonderful working with us on those shows and we’ve gotten both of those shows to an economic area, where as long as they keep rating, there’s no reason why we can’t keep them. It’s no longer a financial question, it’s a creative and performance question."

Brad Schwartz, The CW

The cost-cutting measures at The CW included reducing its reliance on shows from Warner Bros. and CBS, though Deadline states that the network has now been able to lower the licensing fees for All American, All American: Homecoming, and Walker that would allow them to continue ordering and airing new seasons. In the recent past, financial reasons were cited for cancellations, but it seems that these three shows were able to luck out and potentially stick around should the ratings suffice. Keep your fingers crossed for All American season 7!

Season 6 episode count and cast cuts

As much as diehard fans of the series don’t want to see fewer episodes when season 6 premieres in 2024, the season will have a marked decrease in its episode count. Due to the strikes and premiering in midseason, the episode count of season 6 will drop to 13 episodes, down from the previous 20-episode fifth season. The CW has already announced shortened seasons for other shows like Walker and Superman & Lois as well.

When the series returns, the cast could be down a few members. Taye Diggs’ character Billy Baker was killed off in season 5 episode 11 as a result of the bus falling off the cliff. Likewise, Samantha Logan’s character Olivia Baker made the choice to move to London for a year, and Chelsea Tavares’ character Patience Robinson was stabbed at the Bakers’ door in the season finale. Both of their fates are uncertain for season 6.

Here’s who to expect to see next season:

  • Daniel Ezra as Spencer James
  • Bre-Z as Tamia “Coop” Cooper
  • Greta Onieogou as Layla Keating
  • Michael Evans Behling as Jordan Baker
  • Cody Christian as Asher Adams
  • Karimah Westbrook as Grace James
  • Monét Mazur as Laura Fine-Baker
  • Jalyn Hall as Dillon James
  • Hunter Clowdus as JJ Parker

When will season 6 come to Netflix?

Now that we know that season 6 will officially premiere on The CW in April 2024, we can better predict when the complete season will begin streaming on Netflix. Obviously, the sixth season has to finish airing on The CW before it can make its way to Netflix. New seasons usually begin airing on The CW about one week after their televised finales.

Being so, 13 weeks after April 1 would bring us to the end of June 2024, but The CW has not yet indicated that All American season 6 will air uninterrupted without taking a week or two off for repeats. For now, we can guarantee that Netflix watchers will be able to add a new season of All American to their watch lists sometime in summer 2024. Expect to see season 6 hit Netflix in about July 2024. We'll share the exact Netflix release date when the season finale date has been confirmed.
