One of the biggest movies, if not the biggest, hitting theaters in May is the new live-action The Little Mermaid. Not only does it bring nostalgia to everyone who loves the original animated version, but it also brings some much-needed representation to an incredibly popular character and story.

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past three decades (yes, the animated version is that old), the story follows Ariel, a mermaid who yearns to travel to land, have legs, and experience an adventure outside of her normal day-to-day. When she saves a prince from drowning, she becomes even more determined to make it to land.

Well, she gets her chance when the sea witch Ursula grants her wish. But it comes at a cost. She must give up her voice. Ariel, determined to find Prince Eric and live “where the people are,” takes the chance. Little does she know that Ursula has some evil tricks up her sleeve including trying to steal her man right from under her new feet!

The new film stars Halle Bailey as Ariel as well as Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, and Simone Ashley as Indira.

Is The Little Mermaid coming to Netflix?

Unfortunately, The Little Mermaid will not be coming to Netflix. It hits theaters on Friday, May 26, 2023 and then will be on Disney+ after that. As a Disney movie, this isn’t really surprising. With Disney having its own streaming service, there is little chance that their movies are going to show up on Netflix. But before it hits Disney+, the only way to see it will be in theaters.
